Harlie

During my pregnancy with Harlie we learned of her heart and lung defects. They told us that she had a 5% chance of survival after birth, if she made it that far. She did, and as soon as she was born, we could see she had many more problems than we anticipated.

Harlie has Goldenhar Syndrome (a craniofacial syndrome), VACTERAL Association, and Congenital Lobar Emphysema. Harlie’s heart defects are: L-TGA, VSD, intermittent 2nd degree heart block, small right ventricle, 2 small Superior Vena Cava’s (instead of 1 large SVC).

Isaiah Thomas Armstrong Voss was born to us on Jan. 18, 2002, a full six weeks early. He weighed in at 4lbs.8oz. and after four days of weight gain they checked us out of the hospital. Since it was along the road home, they decided to have us stop in at Children's Memorial Hospital (in Chicago) to have a heart murmur checked out, but Isaiah looked like a healthy baby and they assured us it was a common newborn thing to have.

Clara Grace Chilton was born January 23, 1998, and was diagnosed shortly afterwards with tracheoesophageal fistula, esophageal atresia (TEF/EA), severe reflux and a ventricular septal defect (VSD). She had her TEF/EA repaired when she was three days old. After surgery her breathing was labored and stridorous and her ENT discovered unmoving vocal cords (thought at the time to be paralyzed, but we now know that the nerves work and so they are labeled "fixated"). It is unknown whether this was congenital or acquired from the TEF repair.

After a normal pregnancy and delivery, Rachel Brustein was born on August 3, 1994 with esophageal atresia with proximal and distal tracheal esophageal fistulas (TEF), a right sided aortic arch, double aortic arch, and both ventricular and atrial septal defects. The TEF repair was performed the next day; the cardiac surgery was performed nine weeks later.
