Kara was ventilated for the first 4 weeks of her life due to having vocal cord palsy and had a tracheostomy at 4 weeks. She is fed via an NG tube as she can't swallow. Her MRI scan showed some abnormalities and it is beginning to look like she has cerebral palsy. At the moment she is still in hospital waiting for a diagnosis.

Nigel Jonathan Tan was born on 27 November 2001. Though full-term, he weighed only 1620 grams, and showed signs of respiratory distress soon after birth. He was diagnosed as having a rare genetic defect in the 8th chromosome, and had major cardiac anomalies like PDA, a constriction in his aorta and several holes in the heart, one of which was quite large and flooded his lungs.

Dylan is seven and a half years old. He has Cerebral Palsy - severe spastic quad, Hypothyroidism, and epilepsy. He had the trachea put in 3 years ago, because of a bout of Pneumonia, which he was battling to recover from. It was discovered that Dylan had a spinal cord compression on C2/3 level and the doctors felt this was the cause of the pneumonia. This was surgically corrected, but the trach has remained in place. Dylan has had a nasogastric tube since the trachea. He does eat, but not enough to sustain him.

Ryan McMahon was born with Bilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis - no movement at birth. The doctors at our local hospital never saw or treated Bilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis before and could not determine what or how it was caused. The doctors wanted to put a trach in Ryan - no options, no other forms of treatment. We live just about 90 miles (1 hour) away from Boston Children's Hospital so we had Ryan transferred (three days old). From the moment we stepped into Boston Children's Hospital we knew we were in the best place possible.

I had a normal pregnancy no complications. Elyssa was born on March 11, 1999 after 12 hours of labor. My water was broken after I had been in labor for 7 hours only to find that it was maconium stained. I continued to labor until I delivered Elyssa at 9:06am.
