Nathan was born at 38 weeks after a long, complicated pregnancy. He was born by c-section because he had an unkonwn birth defect. Immediately after birth he was whisked away to the NICU to determine what was wrong with him - and so began our waiting. An hour later they had our answer, the answer we'd been waiting months and months for - a TE Fistula with long gap esophageal atresia.

Sarah spent 8 very sick, very stressful months in the hospital. She was on a ventilator for 2 years after she got out of the hospital. She's 11 now and in 5th grade. She's had a cochlear implant since she was 7 years old and just passed auditions to join the band in the percussion group. Her trach made brass or woodwinds difficult to say the least.

On March 29, 2001, I gave birth to a beautiful little girl Alissa Cailin Gonzalez. Because I had a hard time with delivery she was delivered with the help of the vacuum. Immediately the NICU team was already there because she had swallowed her own waste. To make sure she didn't get an infection she was being suctioned. While being suctioned the nurses noticed the catheter was coiling. Upon their discovery she was ambulanced to the closest Children's Hospital (Orange County, CA). Her diagnosis was confirmed; she had Esophageal Artresia (EA) and Tracheoesophageal Fistula (TEF).

My son Mykel Zackary Hamm was born on Friday August 10, 2000. It all started like a pretty normal birth. When he came out he was kind of making a grigly sound. My doctor said he probably swallowed some fluid on the way out. So, when they took him to the nursery the doctors put him under a oxygen hood.

Trisha is a beautiful child. Well, I am her grandmother...Trisha was to be a 1998 Christmas baby. She was almost a Halloween child. She was born October 26, 1998. She weighed in at 2 lbs 13 ounces. Shortly after the emergency c-section the doctor came in to tell my daughter, Trisha would be moved to a children's hospital, miles away. Trisha has a tracheoesophageal fistula.

Trisha came home after 5 months. Trached, and fed by g-tube.
