Isaac was born Sunday, March 31, 2007 with dificulty breathing. The doctor attending realized that Isaac's airway was blocked and began CPR and had someon call 911. EMS arrived quickly but was unable to intubate Isaac and bagged him to the hospital. When he arrived his heartrate was 70 and he was having seizure-like activity. They gave him th necessary medication and he went through 2 attempts at intubation before they were successful. After about 30 minutes the doctor came out and asked if they could transport him to Georgetown Hospital for a cooling procedure that he was a good candidate for. We agreed, signed that paperwork and waited for transport.
We had just moved to VA and didn't know our way around so we tried to follow the ambulance to DC. By the time we had parked and gone upstairs, Isaac was salready on the cooling bed. We spoke to the Cardiologist and he toldus that Isaac hd no blood on the brain and that his heart was fine. The head NICU doctor told us Isaac had PPHN (Persistant Pulmonary Hypertention of the Newborn) wich used to be called fetal circulation. Basically the baby's blood circulated one way while in the womb and it switches when they're born. Isaac's didn't
After a week Isaac was off of all medication and they tried to extubate him, it was unsuccessful. After 4 attempts (the last of which he remained extubated for 72 hours) he got his trach at 1 month old. At 2 months old, he got his G-tube and after a total of 75 days, we were able to bring him home. I'll save our experiences with home health nurses for a blog! (smile)
Isaac has 3 older sisters who were ll born at home with no compications.Trinity(7), Moriah(4 1/2) and Paige (2). We had a son who would be 6 in September who passed away at 7 weeks from SIDS. So when Isaac was born not breathing, I said "God...do you not want me to have any boys? But through all that we've been through I've seen in myself, strength that is supernatural and peace that is truly beyond my understanding. Having Isaac in our family has made me a better person. He's  taught me to slow down and take one day at a time, not to compare him or myself to anyone and to figure out what is most important...take care of that and leave the rest for later.
I am so thankful for this website because I see all of the parents who have been where I am and are still going strong. I admonish every parent who is still reading this LONG biography to be encouraged, don't be weary and don't give up. God knew that you were the perfect parent to welcome that little blessing into the world and no matter how you feel...you are doing a WONDERFUL job!
