TrachKid Profile

This is Nathan Joseph. He was born 14 weeks premature along with his two brothers. He's a triplet!! His brother Nicholas passed away about an hour after delivery. So Nathan was left fighting with his twin brother Noah. Noah also struggled with Chronic Lung Disease. I tried to push to get him a trach but the doctors said he was much too weak and his lungs were to damaged to support him. He passed away 5 days after his due date, only three months old.
Nathan has struggled with many things in his short little life. His breathing wasn't such an issue in the beginning as he was able to be on CPAP a majority of the time. He became very ill after he had abdominal surgery to correct a hole that had formed in his intestine due to the medicine they gave him to fix his heart murmur. He had to have another exploratory surgery on his intestine where they found 12 cm of dead intestine that they didn't see on the ultra sound or x-ray! Thank God for watching over him that day! Nathan was too weak to breathe on his own and had to be put back on the ventilator and hasn't been able to come off since. We decided after talking with a few different doctors that Nathan's lungs are very chronic and in order to have him grow and develop like a normal baby it would be best to give him a trach. It really scared me at first and I did not want to have the procedure done. It came as a shock considering he was breathing so well in the beginning and Noah was the chronic child not Nathan. I knew it had to be done, Nathan kept gaging on his tube, he couldn't get comfortable and he was so mad that he wasn't able to move around like he wanted to.
It has only been three weeks since he had the surgery to get his trach and it really has been a blessing. I can finally see his beautiful face and smile. He's so much happier with his little bit of freedom, and I'm more confident with his care. Even though he is still ventilator dependent and eats through his G-tube he is seeming more and more like a normal baby. I'm starting my training so that I will be able to bring him home soon! I felt so alone until I found this site, It makes me feel so happy that other mothers are caring for children with trachs and I'm not the only one. I can't wait for Nathan to come home and be with his two older brothers Hayden and Owen and watch him grow.
