Marlee Abigail was born December 18, 2006. To all of our surpise Marlee had some issues upon birth. She was transfered to Riley Children's Hospital where she spent 3 weeks in the NICU and then 5 1/2 months in the IIUC. She has been vent dependent since arriving at Riley. She was trached at 10 days old, G-tube at 2 months, tethered cord released 4/08. Marlee was born missing about half of her ribs on the right side of her chest and has fused ribs on the left side. Because of the missing ribs on the right she developed scoliosis in utero which made her right lung hypoplastic. December 12, 2007 Marlee had to first surgery toward getting her VEPTR rods (Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Ribs). July 29, 2008 Marlee had surgery in San Antonio, TX by Dr. Simmons to implant 2 VEPTR. Since this surery Marlee has been able to wean off her vent. She is now off the vent during almost all waking hours and only uses it for sleeping. She is also eating somewhat better now. Marlee also got a Passy-Muir valve, which she loves!! She was able to talk some around her trach, but now with the passy she talks non-stop. Her speech therapist says she speaks at the level of a 3 year-old. She is very advanced cognitively. The only major delay she has is that she is not yet walking on her own. She will talk pushing her babydoll stroller, but not by herself. Marlee has been a true blessing to my life. I hope to one day be updating this profile with a STAR next to her name!! :)
