My daugher Jane was born 16 and half weeks premature and weighed 660 grms. She was ventilated for 4 months. She was her PDA ligated, it was after this surgery that it was suspected that Jane had subglottic stenosis after a failed extubation. She was sent for an MLB which confirmed she was a Cotton grade 4. She had a cricoid spilt and was extubated but failed again. One month later she returned for an MLB which showed slight improvement and laser therepy was performed. Finally after 5 months Jane sucessfully extubated. After several times of going to theatre for a tracheostomy she avoided it! However, our joy was short lived Jane was discharged from hospital after 6 1/2 months and everything was going well. We returned to ENT consultant and all good. Then 2 1/2 months later at a rountine out patients check up it was suspected that the stenosis had returned so Jane was admitted for MLB and confirmed that she had 80% stenosis. She got her trach one week later.
That was 12 months ago and Jane is home full time with me, her dad, and her baby sister. She had phase 1 of her airway reconstruction in May and we are awaiting to see if it was successful or not.
