Yumalai was born on June 10, 2009. I already knew that she was going to be born with heart conditions and was going to need surgery. Yumalai had her heart surgery when she was 6 days old. She was intubated since birth. After surgery, doctor told me that in a couple of weeks I was going to be able to take her home, but it was not like that. Time passed and they tried to extubated her several time. When she was 2 months old the doctors told me that she was going to need a tracheostomy. I was so scare because it was horrible just the thought of breathing thru the neck. Well she had her trach at 2 months old. Yuma was in the NICU for 4 months. After 4 months was transfer to Blythedale Children’s Hospital. She is still in the ventilator and hopefully, she will be out of the vent. soon.
Hi Meli. Well this hospital is pretty good. I like the way it is. I do not know if you already set up a tour with a social worker. I think is a good idea to see the place before your baby come here. There are 3 to 4 babies in a room with a nurse. You mentioned that the hospital is 3 1/2 hours aways from your house. well the good news is that they have a housing program where parents can stay for two weeks. after the 2 weeks parents have to move and wait for another room whenever it open again. You always can sleep next to your baby. This hospital will teach you how to take care of your baby. They really put you to work. I already learned almost everything and when I`m here in the hospital I have to do everything to the baby. They have PT, OT, Speech therapies and a teacher for the babies. I do not know if this info helped you. hopefully it did. I wish you good luck and probably we will see each other here at the hospital.
