Kenya was born on July 18, 1996 weighing only 22 ounces. She was diagnosed with BPD and CP. She spent the first 6-7 months in the hospital and then was sent home with her birth mom. She was in and out of the hospitals numerous times and the trach was placed in August 1999. She came to live with us in February 2001 and we have adopted her. She is legally blind (cortical vision), has a severe hearing loss and will be receiving her first hearing aids soon. She is on continuous oxygen and is confined to a wheel chair. She is now making sounds since her Pulmonary Doctor ordered the Passy-Muir Valve for her. It is great. She does not have to be off the oxygen to wear it and she makes lots of sounds now. She is unable to do anything for herself but she is truly a happy and charming little girl.
Kenya appeared in the Holiday 2003 Abilitations Catalog. She is in the upper right corner with her wheelchair behind her (page S-13).
