July 29, 2007 was just like every other Sunday at our house. We went to church and then Genevieve invited a friend over. They went for a bike ride and when they hadn't returned I had a feeling something was wrong. Unfortunately I was right. My daughter Genevieve is 10 years old, and before that fateful day she was a healthy, typical girl who hadn't been in the hospital since she was born. She had an accident on her bike that day. She picked up too much speed going down a hill, lost control and crashed into a culvert. She hit her neck on the handlebars and fractured her larynx. After a month of struggling to breathe she was trached at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago on August 23, 2007.
Genevieve has had 13 surgeries so far to try and repair her larynx and remove scar tissue. Eventually she is supposed to be decannulated. It could be in a few months, it may be another year or more.
It has been quite a year of change for all of us. We speak a whole new language now.
