Collin Rutledge

TrachKid Profile

Collin was born on August 31, 1996. He began to have breathing problems when he was 4 weeks old and was diagnosed with a massive subglottic hemangioma which eventually obstructed 100% of his airway. Collin has had his trach since he was 10 weeks old.  Finding a specialist to properly diagnose Collin was very difficult and we nearly lost him several times.  After two different hospitals and countless Doctors, we finally made it to Cincinnati Children’s and Dr. Robin Cotton.

Today Collin is doing great! We decided not to treat the hemangioma and to trust God to take care of it. Collin is treated by Dr. Robin Cotton at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital and was expected to get his trach out before the age of 3.  However, the hemangioma had a mind of its own and the size did not decrease as expected.

July 1999 - After much prayer, we decided that Dr. Cotton would surgically remove the tumor and reconstruct Collin's airway.  Collin was decannulated on June 29, 1998.

Collin has always been very happy and can put a smile on anyone’s face!  The first three years of Collin's life were very difficult, but what a blessing he has been.  He has taught us so much and for that I am thankful!

January 2009 - Collin has had minor surgeries and scopes to manage is airway and follows up yearly with Dr. Cotton.  He is a very active, healthy 12 year old and we continue to be thankful to God and feel blessed that he was treated by such a great Doctor!  Collin enjoys baseball, basketball and runs on his Middle School Cross Country Team.
