TrachKid Profile

Alex had a trach for 10 months.  He needed the trach due to having a spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma at age 4 with major complications.  Alex was hospitalized for 7 months and 1 week.  He came home still using the ventilator half the day but started playing sports.  He plays sled hockey and miracle league baseball.  Alex has taken to his therapy programs and continues to get stronger all the time.  He was decannulated on 9/16/10 just 6 days after his 5th birthday.  He is doing great and working hard to get better every day.

humidifier being off all night

When I discovered this morning that my son's humidifier was off all night, I changed his trach right away.  It was clogged some and his voice was hoarse.  I noticed right away there was a problem because of how his voice sounded calling for me when he woke up.  I'm worried because this is the second time it has happened in 2 months.  Are there long term effects?  He has a scope next week so we will no for sure.  The plan today is to give him extra breathing treatments.
