Bryan is five years old and has had a Trach since he was 3 weeks old. He was born with multiple medical problems originating from my have chicken pox in the 14th week of pregnancy. His tracheostomy was required due to aspiration resulting from his paralyzed vocal cord and swallowing dysfunction. He has never been able to eat by mouth, and gets all his food via G-Tube.
Bryan also contracted Adneovirus when he was 7 months old, which left his lungs severely damaged. He has been on CPAP and O2 for most of his life, and was diagnosed with Bronchiectitis and BOOP (Bronchiolitus Obliterans with Organizing Pneumonia). In the fall of 1997, we thought the deterioration of his lungs would require a lung transplant. Instead, however, our doctor put us on monthly pulse steroid treatments consisting of massive doses of IV steroid for short periods of time each month. This has dramatically improved his condition, and now he is off CPAP, and only requires O2 at night.
Bryan entered a regular public kindergarten this fall, and is doing terrific. We are extremely proud of him.
