Brianna Nicole Barber was born on Sept. 23,1998. She weighed 5 lbs 13 oz, and was not a preemie. She stopped breathing right after she was born, and the nurses thought that it was due to the stress of being born so they gave her some steroids. The steroids caused a dime-sized hole in her stomach. She was rushed to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, AL. She was five days old when they repaired her stomach and put in a G-tube . All of this time the vent was helping her breathe. Then ENT doctor looked at her and wanted to do a cricoid split. This procedure went fine, and everything was looking good. Brianna came home the week after Halloween and stayed until right after Thanksgiving. She started to have problems breathing, so she went back to Children's. After the ENT looked at her again, he began talking about giving her a trach. That was one of the most scary times in my life. But there was no alternative. She had her trach put in in December, and spent Christmas in the hospital. She came home January 2, 1999. It was a great way to start the year. Since then she has had the minimum number of colds. On July 20,1999 we tried to decanulate her, the doctor said that everything looked good. The only problem was that nobody asked Brianna if she wanted the trach out. If they had, they would have heard a very loud "NO!". She is now cutting her first tooth, and is a very happy baby. We hope that she will get her trach out, but we are in no hurry.
