Abigail MacMillan was born Feb 3, 2001 in Ottawa, Canada. She had a very traumatic birth with the forceps and the vacum. She was born at 8.05 am and was taken to the Childrens' Hospital of Eastern Ontarion by 2 pm. Abby remained at CHEO for 4 months, finally being discharged on May 29th.
She was diagnosed at 5 weeks of age with Central Congenital Hypoventilation Syndrome. Basically Abby's brain forgets to tell her body to breath while she sleeps. She does not breathe well enough on her own to sustain herself. Therefore she had surgery for the placement of a trachestomy so that a ventilator would be hooked up to her trach while she slept. At the age of 7 weeks Abby was sheduled to have the surgery for her trach but went into cardiac arrest. Thankfully Abby pulled through this event unscathed. (unfortunatley her parents did not) She then had a succesful surgery at 9 weeks of age.
Abby is now 7 years old and has a younger sister named Olivia, who we are proud to say is a healthy nose breather. Abigail is in the first grade and is doing very well. She has proved to be a very healthy little girl in spite of her condition. Abby participates in many activities, she loves to; ski, play tennis, skip rope, she is in the choir at school and enjoys playing with her friends.
We are very proud of Abby and all of her accomplishments. She is a remarkable little girl, who doesn't let the fact that she has a trach and a ventilator slow her down at all. (even though it slows her mom and dad down :)
Abby is having a wish granted through the Make A Wish foundation. Her wish is to go to Disney.
So we will be making our way there in mid May. To say that we are super excited is putting it mildly.
We will be staying at the Give the Kids the World resort, and from what I have heard it sounds incredible.
I will post pics later on.
