hi, everyone...
Well this is whats going on, Alex had an appointment with his doctor. so the doctor wants alex to come off the vent, so the medical company brought us a sleep oxymeter. that is going to record all night how he is breathing without the vent how his also keeping up his o2 and his ♥rate...well at home we have a compressor that is like a trach collar that humidifies the air ...we can use it when ever we decide to put this oxymeter, the thing is we are afraid his going to stop breathing, and he also like sleeping with his face on the mattress or a blanket over his face... What can we do? We have thought of maybe putting an HME its the humidifer moisterizer exchanger. it goes over the trach its clear and shaped like a cylinder. We have no clue in what else is ok. YOu know the Drs. say its ok, but its not like talking to a parent that has gone threw this. Well please email me or leave you comment. THANKS........ Alexanders mommy

Hi Nellie, My son is 2 and
Hi Nellie,
My son is 2 and we have been using the compressor for the humid air and the PulsOx since he was about 1 month old. Clinton has never required to be on a vent and currently today he uses a Passey-Muir valve 24/7. We haven’t used the compressor since he was about 10-11 months old since he sleeps with his passey – he doesn’t need the humidity. However, we still use the PulsOx and are thankful to have it because that’s how my husband and I get some sleep. The levels can be set to any number so that it alarms when he goes to unsafe levels. This will tell you if he is not getting enough air. My son also sleeps on his stomach and its amazing how they figure out a comfortable way to sleep with the trach and still be able to breathe, comfortably. I agree with the other posts the HME is not something that should be used during the night, for Clinton it creates too much moisture. I hope this info helps…
HME vs. Trach collar
Hello Alex's Mom,
My son wears a trach collar every night. The HME is NOT recommended to wear while they are sleeping. If they wear the HME all night there are many disadvantages to it: 1. It does not provide adequate amount of moisture needed for the trachea and lungs. 2. If secretions are coughed up into the HME it will obstruct the airway. 3. The HME can "pop" off easily and then there would be NO moisture, causing the trachea and lungs to dry-out. 4. It could "pop" off and become a choking hazard.
The Trach collar is VERY nice....it keeps the moisture at a steady rate throughout the night and sometimes the collar can move off to the side a little bit but the moisture still seems to get enough into the trach, even if it has moved over some. If your house is really dry though you may have to fill the inhalation water up again half way through the night (we had to on the REALLY cold nights of winter) As long as you have a monitor(heart rate/respiration) on him you will be fine, even if he likes his head in the mattress or blanket.
Hope this helped

thanks for letting me know. He had been sleeping with the HME at night time. And i have to get up like 6 times to suction. When he was on the vent he never needed suctioning during the night. And now its completely different. Well i will put the trach coller on tonight. Thanks for letting me know n thanks for your help.
re: Can anyone Help me PLEASE...i need some advise
Hello Alex's Mom! My daughter loves to sleep on her tummy too and although we have a night nurse who watches her, I know that she is able to breath just fine in that position. I've watched her sleep since the beginning of bringing her home and so far she's such a survivor and strong willed. The HME is OK, but it doesn't provide much humidified air. When our power goes out during storms, I use the HME. I wish I could be more help.
thanks
thankyou for taking the time to reply. Alexander has been sleeping with the HME, but we have to suction allot maybe like 6 times at night, and before when he had the vent we only had to suction maybe 1 or none at all. well he has been off the vent since monday, and he has done well. the sleep study he had came out good. The doc, was happy with his results. wee get to go to the pulmonary clinic on april 15 i will let you know hoe it went. And again Thanks
