Accidental Decannulation

Nicky has pulled her trach out last night, luckyly we were able to pull one straight back down. She went blue so quick. It was such a scare. it might sound silly but i don't dare to go to the bathroom anymore a few minutes more and she might not be here anymore.
Has anyone else had such dangerous close calls? How can I prevent this?

samething here

Hi my name is nellie im the mother of alexander...and yes this has happened at our home, and its been more than 4xs! at first it was very scary!!then the 2nd time it was in out car while i was driving, the 3rd was at home and he actually came and said mami...and he was making funny breathing noises like showing me he was breathing threw his mounth n nose, but his trach looked like it was still in place, next think i check was the trach to see if air was passing threw, sure enough NO AIR!=[ i looked carefully and he had pulled his trach out from under and it was under his split gauze covering it on the side, but the thing is he was breathing fine! the 4th time happend just last week, i was sleeping and my daughter woke up and was watching sponge bob, and then my on woke up, few min later my daughter said to me...whispering, mommy, i reply WHAT! she said look at alex, i peekd at him with 1 eye bc i was still sleppy, and he was calm watching tv without his trach. i watched him for like 2 min, n he was breathing normal no color change, i got up calmly and got a trach and placed it in, bc if i were to panic i think maybe his airway can collapse. well thats whats going on in my home, he his going in to the OR for an evaluation for decannulation on monday 11-22-10=] goodluck every1

Yep.

This sounds all too familiar. In the middle of the night, she would wake up and play with her trach ties. She'd un-do the velcro in the front, and then she'd be decannulated.
I take some paper tape now and wrap it around the front velcro straps so she can't undo it.
There's only one thing you can do and that is just to watch your kid all the time and not let your guard down.
We've had several close calls, and one in particular where she was a dark purple color. It was not a good night. But we bagged her back up.
Even though we hate the alarm of the pulse ox, it's our lifeline and we rely on it more than we'd like to admit.

Hi Lucy.  I am so sorry to

Hi Lucy.  I am so sorry to hear about the scare.  I have been there.  Carson's trach came out before and he passed out very fast and we finally got a new one in and we had to bag him and he started to pinkin up we thought we had lost him then. We would always make sure the his trach ties were good and secure and we made sure he had his posey on over the trach tie to make sure it would not go no where.  Just don't put it too tight which you know.  We taught him and he knew that you do not pull it out because he could not breathe without it.   That was when we looked into the reconstruction surgery.. Good luck dear!

Clinton has pulled his trach

Clinton has pulled his trach out before but we didnt have quite as scarry of a situation.  He is now decannulated (by the doctor..lol) but when he did have his trach he pulled it out a few times.  Make sure the ties are tight but not too tight - we use the one finger rule. You should be able to slip at least one finger in between the neck and the tie.  If you have the ties on for more than a day sometimes they can stretch and you sould check them regularly to make sure they arent too loose.

accidental decannulation

I read your post and just had to comment! Yes, I hae had that problem with my little girl and I'll agree it is very scary! My daughter had her trach upsized about a year ago and after the proceedure we went home and she wanted to take a nap,I put her to bed and went to hang out with my husband and other two girls but shortly after I laid Lillie down something told me to go check on her and sure enough I'm glad I did because there she was completely asleep without her trach in! I tried to put it back in but because it had just been upsized a few hours earlier it would not go back in! I ended up having to call an ambulance! We finally got her trach back in and she was fine but I never wanted to go through it again! I've been told there's nothing you can do to stop it but it is scary! My daughter has decannulated herself about three times but hasn't done it anymore! I wish you luck and hope you never hae to go through anything like that again!
